Compaq Presario 700 Won't Load Freezes On 'We

Specs: Windows XP SP2, 768/256
Starts to boot up at Compaq slash screen...Windows "Welcome" then it kind of flashes and crashes then a couple of seconds of the Compaq screen and then that (f8) page "Last known
Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally and Safe Mode. It does the same thing no matter what I choose.
I'm a Mac guy. My daughter didn't back up her Windows computer and she wants her pictures and music etc. She used this all thru college and it was great. It needed some work once in a while but that was all. Now I need to know if this is a HDD problem or a software problem or both and like I said if it was a Mac I would know in a sec...but Windows is just too complicated. So please if you
can point me in the right direction. For instance I can't even get the Repair CD-Rom to boot but that's probably because I don't know which key on this know they're all different.

Before trying any fixes, best to save the important stuff.

Slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms. Copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the host HD or other media.
Now put it back in your comp, once again, no need to bolt it in at this stage ( change the jumper, back to where it was ) go into the Bios & set the boot to either Boot from floppy or CD 1st. Now off the boot floppy, fdisk, reboot & format. Or, from the XP CD, delete the partitions. You lose everything.
Now reinstall the operating system.
Slave it again to the other comp & copy your stuff back.
Notebook / Laptop Hard Drive to Desktop Adapter (2.5" to 3.5")
