Hi,
I have this PC that took almost 1/2 hr to boot up fully so I decided to use the 5 disc Recovery set and do a clean format & install. When I get to the 3rd disc I start getting errors like problem in extracting process: program files\Wild Tangent\Games etc. So I click ok....etc till it keeps installing (44% done), then I get to other things it can't extract....anyone know how to overcome this problem? The Cd's are not scratched. Also, I start by putting the disc1 into the DVD drive and then that locks and when it's time to insert another disc, the CDROM opens, but the other DVD rom stays locked?
Thanks alot

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

you should FDISK and format your hard drive first. Seems like you've got some malicious software that's interfering with your rebuild process. When you mentioned Wild Tangent, that threw up a flag that means adware/spyware is the probably cause.
Before you FDISK, back up any data you want to keep on different media (i.e. CD, 2nd hard drive, flash drive, etc.).

There is a small pin hole at the front of the drive to open the drawer when the power is off.

Maybe you are suppose to be using the CD-Drive to re-install the OS.

Thanks for the quick response!
I can't for the life of me get into the bios to set the pc to boot from a floppy, so I can install win98SE drivers and fdisk and format.
Also, when I try to get into safe mode it says the followingfile is missing or corrupt:
windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

please re-install a copy of it?
Thanks

This is some really off the wall advice here. Recovery disks will wipe the hard drive so what on earth difference will fdisk do anyway?
Bios for Compaq is tapping F9 or F10 at the beginning, I never can remember which.
You want to set cdrom to 1st or second boot and then boot to recovery disk and reformat and install new OS.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Ok normally I would say it's a bad cd rom, but since you also tried dvd player then that is much less likely. While it could be many things I am starting to think it is a hard drive on the way out. Try installing to another hard drive.

here's an up-date
I finally got the system restore done with all 5 discs and now it's hanging on the page that asks:
What's your computers name, when I click next, the page hangs but I can still move the cursor around? I can hear HD activity but the hour glass stays on

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I meant to say cd rom and dvd are out of the loop so I see it as hard drive or finally motherboard.
That is how you find out, testing and chaging out each one until you arrive at the answer!!!!
