Hi, I have a Compaq Presario v5000 with Windows XP S2 that I got from a friends father. Every few days when I log on a blue screen with white words would pop up and shut down my laptop, someone told me I should reformat it but I don't know how. I would like to just erase every thing and start clean. The computer came with 2 disc one titled "Operating System CD" and the other "Application and Driver Recovery DVD" I have no idea how to fix it. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

If you're having a hardware problem, formating & reinstalling Windows isn't going to fix it, so I recommend you try troubleshooting.

It's possible the CPU is overheating, so the 1st thing you should do is blow the dust out of the cooling vents. Use a can of compressed air if you have one, or you can even try putting your mouth up to each vent, then huff & puff. If a bunch of dust comes out using the 'mouth method', get a can of air & give it a good blast.

Another thing you should do is disable the auto-restart feature. That will keep the blue screen displayed so you'll be able to record the STOP code & error message, then maybe one of us can help find the fix. Here's how it's done:
