Compaq computer freezes randomly

Specs: Windows XP
Since a week or two my computer seems to freeze randomly, especially when I've just turned it on. Windows' interfaces are the first to stop responding, then after a few seconds the mouse freezes. Strangely, running processes, such as audio or video, keep playing (although staggering). The computer doesn't respond to any commands, and I have to reboot it manually...

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this behavior? It doesn't seem like a software-issue to me? The PC is about two years old, a dual-core which has lately been checked when the harddisk broke.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

To eliminate some processes in Task Manager ----
You can do Start, then RUN, then type
Then uncheck items in the Startup tab.

To find out what each Startup(or Process) item
does or means, and any recommendation as to if you should close the process:
Task List Programs
The Process Library

Yes, it's a good idea to reduce the number of applications being loaded when you first boot Windows if the freezing up is particularly noticeable at that point. Just get rid of any programs that you don't need to use straight away.

Have you installed any new hardware like printers, webcams or scanners? Occasionally adding a new hardware device can scramble Windows - especially if it doesn't have the right drivers.

It could also be linked to the power supply or the videocard if you are still receiving sound but with a frozen desktop...
