Hi there can someone assist me?.
I have a compaq presario 1245 notebook with a Lucent Winmodem (compaq 56k-dfi) installed inside it, the modem won't work with windows 2000 or windows xp, in the device manager it says can't start firmware or something like but on the otherhand it works fine under windows 9x and ME. can someone please assist??????

its the drivers.....from the info you've given me, I'm like 90% sure its the drivers....go to the compaq site or wherever and find up to date drivers FOR XP/2k to get it working properly. If it doesn't work....well there's some sort of compatibility problem in there.

It is not a driver problem at all. The bios for the compaq 1245 is incompatible with win2k and winxp. Compaq is probably not going to fix it either.

I have a similar problem, after upgrading to Windows XP on my Presario 4850. It says "...the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources." Is it the BIOS here as well?
After much searching, I found some alternate drivers by the modem company that is no longer Lucent (Agare? Something like that...), but they are NT drivers, I guess, not officially signed XP drivers, and they still don't work.
At this point, if I need a modem, I guess I'll go buy one that's specifically XP compatible or an external one (like the good ol' days).
Aside from this and the DVD player, XP works pretty well! It's the most stable this machine has ever been.

Am looking for a Windows XP driver too.
Can not find any support or help in the COMPAQ web site. In the shop they can only refer me to any "internet help".
If the DVD would not respond too, (as a previous message reports) I best throw my machine out of the window and buy a serious brand of computor as a next choice.
Is COMPAQ or the modem manufacturer planning to DO something ?

In general, and not Compaq specifically, I don't think that the manufacturers are interested in products that haven't been sold in years.
Although, it does make me wonder -- are Lucent-type winmodems no longer used in newer systems? Considering the large number of existing hardware, you'd think Microsoft might try to get something to work.
These winmodems allow them to sell computers cheaper than they would be able to otherwise, but aside from that, they are often a hassle, if you stray too far from the original operating system. My problem is going to the store and looking at replacement cards -- how can I be sure that I found one that ISN'T a winmodem?
I could buy an external modem. That brings me to another gripe: my Compaq only has one serial port. How is XP at recognizing old ISA cards? I might have an old serial/parallel port card laying around (probably running at a slow baud rate).

i've a Presario 5130 with the same modem, piece of crap dont work with XP, im gonna to "downgrade" back to Wimdows 98 where it will work. i'll never buy Compaq again!

Same situation with a presario 1234. Zero solution: Compaq said that presario serie is a "home entertrainement" targeted one. Then no support for win2k/xp.
Compaq sucks! This s---ty 1234 was my last Compaq, for this life at least.[sorry for my bad English!]

Atleast happy to see these responses to the same problem I have with Comapq1245. If Compaq is unable to provide the driver etc.. required to solve this, naturally they may lose the hearts of people.

Yes, COMPAQ SUCKS!
I own a 1220 Notebook with the same nternal 56K Dfi modem and Compaq told me to support only Windows 95 and/or 98 but for sure not Windows 2K, not to say Windows XP. Then I told them what they think by theirselves to have such a consumer policy, not offering computers that are cmpatible with new microsoft windows versions. A son answered me: that's our policy sir! So then I answered they will be boycoyted worldwide for this consumer-hating point of view! So everybody, NEVER EVER buy those computers from COMPAQ again! They have bad services, no upgrades, their BIOS has ofte faults they don't repair and put on the net for download etc etc. Dont buy Compaq, PackardBell(those guys make computers with new processors on OLD motherboards..) just like DELL, just go to Toshiba or another good reseller:)

Have search for hours on the net to find a way of running my compaq 56K/DFi with windows XP it appears that the only way to run XP is to scrape the modem. Compaq do not seem to be interested in this issue so like others I will not be buying another compaq.

I'm really glad to find out that I'm not the only one with this problem. I also could not get my 56k/DFi modem in my 1650 laptop to work with XP. Afetr a few hours of searching for a driver, I guess there isn't one. Compaq sucks. NEVER BUY ANYTHING COMPAQ.

Same here. Compaq blues go on...
After searching out whole internet for the XP modem driver, I knew that I was out of luck when I purchased compaq presario 1273. The AC adapter already got loose casing frequent blackout problem.
it just SUCKS !!!
Dont but compaq ever Pls.

Hi All!!
whew, and i thought i was the only one with this dang prob with the modem.!!although i sympathize deeply with everyone on the compaq/modem/xp-2k prob. I have the same prob. went about and beefed up the 1245 and "upgraded" to xp only to find that the modem will not work due to a bios conflict that cannot be changed.
However compaq cannot be held responsible for this problem. (and believe me i was tempted to send them hate mail on the issue, mostly cuz i wasted $90 on xp and cant return it) Yes i can hear you now. WHY?!?! WTF!!! here is a simple anology that should clear things up. . . .
Im a pontiac firebird fan. unfortunately although mine is totally loaded, it only has a 3.1ltr (v6 to all you laymen) if i take out the engine and replace it with a 5.0, can i hold pontiac responsible for the "upgrade"? can i hold them responsible for all the parts and warrenties involved? the car DID/DOES work fine as is (i just want it to perform faster and better). Of course not. they do have firebirds with 5.0 in them. either i buy the new models that come out with features that i want, or start digging into it and changing what i want. After all that is what we are trying to do when we "upgrade" our pc's we're in essence altering the manufacture specs. I over clocked my pc from 233 - 300mhz. if it fries my system should i hold intel repsonsible?
Gary W (post 5) has the right idea. external modem is what you will have to do, unless your a super geek, in which case you may be able to tap into the bios and flash your own changes (saying that the bios is flashable) or you can write your own driver (which is what im gonna look into). because we know that it will work in 98, just have to find out how and why it does and somehow export that information to something that XP and 2k can understand.
so in close i've installed 164ram(another drawback, its all it can have), cdr, bigger HD and a few other features in mine and they all work fine. so either i go and blow a thousand dollars for a new laptop that supports 2k/xp or i can just spend about $59.99 for an external modem, stickit in the slot and away i go. but i dont feel compaq is responsible for a modem that does work on the system that they designed it for (win98). incase some of you on the 1200 series took it off, there is a sticker on the side that says "Optimized for Windows 98".
just my 2.33 cents worth :-)
for those of you that dont throw tomatoes at me for my post, if/when i get a driver working i'll post it here. an impossible task, but that is what we geeks strive for, a challange!kind regards
Richard

Well, first I'd like to thank all of you for saving me a load of time. I was about to embark on the great modem driver hunt after checking out Compaq's site and finding zilch information to help me. But you guys have saved me the time.
A comment re Compaq: while I agree with Richard and his analogy, it still sticks in my craw that Compaq reps. and site don't at least offer to look into it and maybe provide a driver or bios upgrade or something. They are losing a LOT of consumer support..mine included.Cheers from Oz
Mark

I have the same problem and I have given up but you so you know. The compaq Presario 56K-DFi is really a Lucent Win Modem! Try to find drivers that works with Xp and please email them to me if you find any.
BYE!

Also got the same problem! This f%** Compaq ends here. In my garbage container. And I'm not going to by a new Compaq - that's for sure.
Bye Compaq

Wow - I really thought my wish to upgrade to W2K Pro on my Compaq 1260 was unique. Like all of you, I've had a problem with the 56K-DFi modem. I've also phoned Compaq who told me that I had bought a home entertainment PC. I asked the guy that if that was so, why did so many of my clients have Presarios? He was a bit lost for an answer. FOR SURE - I'M BOYCOTTING COMPAQ TOO. I cannot believe that they're too miserly to invest in creating a driver/fix for this common problem. P.S. I'd love to hear from anyone who discovers a driver or fix!
