Comp wont start after SP3

Specs: Windows XP SP3, AMD Athalon 3100
Hey all, just recently set up a buddies computer. He's been using it previously but we set it up at my place. Here's what went down:

1) I noticed that he did not have an active virus scan on his computer. he said he hadn't had one since getting it. I quickly installed AVG and ran a scan, it found one virus, looked harmless. Unfortunately I did not copy down the name of the virus at the time.

2) I then installed Spybot Search and Destory to check for adware and spyware since he had not used a virus scan or adware program since getting the machine. It, too, found a few bits of spyware. Once again, nothing seemed serious, and so I did not copy down the name of the spyware at the time.

3) Windows then wanted to download and install SP3. I downloaded the update using windows, installed it, and then restarted the computer.

Now after this the computer cannot start. It comes to a screen that says "Windows failed to start properly" and then asks if I want to try restarting, restoring to the last known good configuration, or starting in safe mode.

I tried restarting it again, and it still did not work, so I tried restarting using the last known good configuration. No dice, it still wont work.

I can start the computer in safe mode, and in safe mode with networking, but no other way. I've tried running another virus scan, which found nothing, and also disabling unneeded startup programs thinking that they may be corrupt. Nothing I do will make it restart normally.

Any ideas?

Something may have been changed by Spybot S&D. Go into Safe Mode and open Spybot. Try using the RECOVERY button and undo what you did.

Hi Grasshopper, thanks for the quick reply. I opened Spybot and went into Recovery and there is no backup listed there. When I opened spybot this time is asked if I wanted to CREATE a backup, which it did not do the first time I opened the program. I'm guessing I'm pooched there, huh?

Try removing SP3 and see what that does for you.

How do I remove SP3? Just through add-remove programs or something like that?

Ok, I tried uninstalling SP3. It went for a while, got to step 4 of 5, and then says "System could not find the file specified. Service Pack Three could not be uninstalled."

So I now tried to REINSTALL SP3, hoping that because of the last error message, it may have just been a botched install. Still getting the same problem... Im running out of ideas here. Windows came installed on the machine so there is no CD or anything like that, and I cant find the sticker that would normally have the serial number or cd key. I really dont want to go through the trouble of reformatting or reinstalling if there is anything else that can fix it.

When you boot up in safe mode, look in Device Manager to see if there are any conflicts indicated or any devices that are not working.
