Subject: Comp restarts on its own
OS: WinXP

Comment:

My computer started to restart on its own, so I decided to format it thinking that it is the new "cheap" scaner that I just installed. (it was time for a format)

I ran into many problems trying to install WinXP, always a currupt or missing file, but every time its a different file.

I tryed this about 20 times and it finaly worked because every time i got the error I would switch the cd for a different copy of winXP that I have, and it would work.

Still it took a few blue screens but I finaly managed to install WINXP...

But the computer is still randomly restarting on its own, and when trying to install some programs the process freazes.

Can anyone help me with figuring out what are some of the possible causes for this??

I am thinking its eather:
- hard drive
- ram
- power suply

It most certainly has to be a hardware issue. Your harddrive may be on it's way out, the computer may be overheating, not enough power is getting to your components or your ram might be faulty causing incomplete or inproper processing. 9 times out of 10 it's the harddrive, so that would be the first thing to check or swap over if you have another one to test with.

Make sure everything is plugged in inside the machine and nothings loose and that all the fans are working okay. Make sure the memory is seated correctly and locked into place. If you can find another harddrive then put that in and try loading windows on to that, obviousley setting the new drive as master. Detatch the scanner though, whatever!
