Comp. Hangs on Splash Screen

November 1, 2009 at 16:01:17
Specs: Windows XP, 512mb
Due to my norton subscription being up, i decided to uninstall the program using the Add/Remove programs in control panel. After doing so, I restart the computer. Now all the computer does is hang on the windows boot screen as if it was going to start up. The little bars are moving and everything so its not frozen, just hangs there.

How would an uninstall of norton make my boot up corrupt?

I tried safe mode, no luck. I also tried last known good congifuration and still no luck.

I have the discs that came with my computer to restore windows or repair it. I would prefer a repair, being that I have information that I cannot loose at all. A format is out of the question.

I was told it may be a bad boot file or something that a repair would be able to fix.

Can anyone please please help me with this issue my computers been giving me?

If anyone knows about the problems, could you please provide me with the details on how to go about fixing it. I have a lot of valuable information on the computer that I'm just looking to recover.

Even if someone can tell me how to pull a few folders from the hard drive, and than do a format afterwards would be ok. Alls I am worried about is retrieving the my documents, pictures, and videos folders.

Any help appreciated.

shaunm89 , my SWAG is Norton's. It's notoriously hard to get rid of. Seems it writes a number of sorta obscure files and unless you know where the bodies are buried, you can't avoid it. Either re-download it and use the uninstaller or find a free remover @:

Ed in Texas,

I appreciate your reply.. I would have definetly done that by now, but being that my computer hangs on the boot up screen I cannot even get into windows. I see no logon screen, or anything. This happens even when trying to boot into safe mode. It just hangs on the screen where it says Windows XP with the blue bars that move across on the bottom. The bars aren't frozen either. They do move, but nothing happens.

Any other ideas? Anyone?

I'm desperate:(
