Comment:

I've got three WinXP PC's networked via a router.

Is there some way to send small little text messages between the three? Preferably using an existing WinXP function?

kisses?? anyway i digress.what service pack do you have installed on these machines? if its SP1 you can use the net send feature in DOS or computer management to send msg`s over NETBIOS to PC`s on your LAN.if it is SP2 the service is still available but because it is a security hole MS have turned the feature off.so u need to go into services and turn on the "messenger" service.

right click on my computer click on manage.right click at the top of the tree on computer managment local and click on connect to another PC.type the HOSTNAME of the PC in the bar and press ok.u will now be presented with a screen that pretty much looks the same.now right click again on computer managment at the top of the tree go to all tasks and then send console message.providing the messenger service is running on ALL pc`s u will be able to send the message.
