shutdown; also, it says

'shutdown' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

You should be able to type shutdown, if you do, it doesn't do anything however, it does give you a read out of some sort. Try typing "shutdown.exe -t 00 -s" without " " that should work

Yes it is - open command prompt, type in shutdown /? You will get the required parameters that you need to use for whatever you're trying to do.

if you want to use a batch command then, type this exactly:

c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -r -f -t 20 -c "Your computer is shutting down... whats the magic word?"

when using a batch command, you need to include a complete path. Hope this works AJP

Try this, go to the system32 folder and just check and make sure that the shutdown.exe file is still there because I'm starting to think that the file may have been moved or is missing completely, just a thought, check that out before we go any further...

its there; but when i double click on it, it opens, and closes real fast; comp doesnt shut down. i suspect a virus, or a hacker.

That's normal for when you double-click on it, that always happens, I don't think that it's a virus or a hacker and the simple reason is, normally, the shutdown.exe file doesn't get hacked by hackers and a virus usually doesn't target that direct file. I just wrote a quick batch file, and I want you to download it and see if it works properly, if it does then, you shouldn't have any more problems, I'm using the same code that you supplied above just changed it a little bit, the link can be found at http://ajp.hopto.org/shutdown.bat
