i open start->run->cmd->cd\ and i select a folder of any drive it gives invalid directory what can i do

Examples of a change directory command.
cd c:\
cd c:\windows
cd "c:\program files"You need to use quotes around a 'long' folder name. One with more than 8 characters or one that has imbedded spaces.
XP DOS commands

cd \
is a valid command. the "\" is the root of the drive you're on at that moment in time.
So issuing the above command from anywhere takes you to the root of the drive.
When attempting to change to a folder with a long folder name use the Tab key to complete the long folder name.
Example:
You open your command prompt window. You're sitting at:
C:\Documents and Settingschange to the root:
cd \
You're now at:
C:\>Now change back to the Documents and Settings folder:
cd docu (Hit Tab now and it completes for you and you're left with)
cd "Documents and Settings"
Hit Enter and you're back where you started:
C:\Documents and Settings

"cd docu (Hit Tab now and it completes for you and you're left with)
cd "Documents and Settings"
Hit Enter and you're back where you started:
C:\Documents and Settings"Didn't work for me - XP Home SP.2 - just tabbed across the page! "The system cannot find the path specified"
But hitting F7 brings up the Command History from which one can be highlighted then Enter to execute it. Repeatedly hitting F8 will run thru' the Command History.
Here's an old blog which might be of interest.

hmmm......maybe it's because you use XP Home and I'm using the Professional version but somehow I doubt it. I double checked before posting that reply and that's exactly how it worked for me so perhaps you did something wrong....or, Home doesn't do that....I don't have any versions of Home around to check on.
Maybe somebody else who uses XP Home would be kind enough to test and see what results they get. I'm very curious to know and also, if Home doesn't do this, it would be good for me to know it so I don't inadvertently give anyone bad advice in the future.
XP Home users, give it a go and reply here please! :)

When I open command prompt, the path is c:\documents and settings\user name. The problem is that commands do not run unless i CD back to windows\system32\cmd.exe How can I correct this problem?
