theres been some updates on my work computer, dont know if this is related, but since that time I can no longer run the command prompt, e.g. start>run>'cmd' or run any batch files -- what happens is the prompt starts to load. then the task-bar disappears for a second then reappears, any directories i had open are closed. any ideas how to resolve this? thanks

The cmd prompt should start 'NTVDM.EXE'. Check to see if it's missing. It should be in the c:\windows\system32 folder.

If it's there, it might be corrupted. You 'might' be able to restore it with SFC (the System File Checker).
