I have a Garmin 295 handheld GPS with mapping software that communicates with it through the serial port. Problem is there is no communication. Garmin tech support says there is some software or device on my computer that is using COM1 and I will have to search it out.

What process do I need to go through to find out what is using this COM port?

SANDRA Lite 2005.SR1 has (I believe) an option to display "Ports Information" which will tell you what's connected to any COM port.

You can download it from:

http://www.download.com/SANDRA-Lite/3000-2086_4-10369892.html?tag=lst-0-1

This version is shareware but free for private or educational use (see license). Some modules are only available in the commercial versions.

Just a follow up.

If the lite version doesn't do it for you, you can download the FULL Sisoft Sandra version
from this link (click on it) > ►► LINK ◄◄.

I have known people who have gotten software from this guy fosi, which were all good.

If you use a Palm Pilot or similar PDA, that can do it, even if it uses a USB port.
