after downloading a couple of films i tried to watch them as normal on windows media player but i am getting a message saying that it is unable to play these files as it cant recognise the 'codec' used to compress the file. I dont know what this means but more to the point is there anyway that i can play it.

Install VideoLan Client (VLC).
It's another small and really good player that can play the most video formats.
