How do you close the running background programs in XP Home?

Have tried Ctrl+Alt+delete (as in '98) but this only brings up any active programs in XP. Have also tried msconfig but this gives me an error message.

I am unable to run Chkdsk and have been advised to close all these programs.

Also what are the programs that need to be left running like systray & explorer in '98?

I'm know this is probably common knowledge but I am at a complete loss.
Thanking you for your replies.

Start > Run > taskmgr then look at the Processes tab (if you don't see any tabs, then double-click the border)

You may see 20 processes including these vital ones:
SPOOLSV, SVCHOST (multiple times), LSASS, SERVICES, WINLOGON, CRSS, SMSS, TASKMGR, EXPLORER, System, System Idle Process

Visit www.blackviper.com to learn what processes do and how to disable unnecessary ones.
