Hi,

Is it save to clear the master boot record, without having a reason? Or will I lose some info/data? And if save, what's the best way to do it?

TIA, Dennis

To help or to be helped, what's the question?

You do not want to 'clear' the MBR. Actually the only way I know to do it is the write zeros to the complete disk. There is no utility to clear the MBR.
The MBR holds the Master Boot Record and the partition info for the drive.
If you want to erase the partition info you can use DelPart, a free download.
If you want to clear the whole drive us KillDisk or a write zeros utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

There could be a reason to clear the mbr. If your running windows xp and your drive letters get messed up on any of your hard drives including usb external drives. Boot with a windows 98 boot disk. At the prompt type fdisk /mbr then enter.
This will force XP to regather the partition info and reorganize your drive letters. Using this command shouldnt effect the boot process.
If your running Windows 9x this will not help becasue Windows 9x does not save the partition info after you restart or shutdown.

You would want to save the MBR and be sure you understand what it is and how to check it before you continue. You are better off getting some boot cd that has Ranish to see what is exactly in the MBR first too. Pretty sure there are other ways to view the MBR but I like Ranish.

Repost on new post as to EXACTLY why would want to be doing this in the first place.
