i cant seem to get a clean install of windows xp i keep getting this message .....Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete the installation.

Are you installing over a previous version of an operating system without formatting?
If you are formatting, are you doing a quick format? If not then choose to format the drive and do a full format.
If you still get the error after formatting grab a win98 bootdisk, and remove all partitions manually...

Im trying to install xp pro over xp pro ...it wont let me format or delete the partition.now every time i turn on the pc it makes me choose between continuing with setup or log on to previous version of xp.

Boot the window XP CD, it will let you delete your window and reinstall it. (You might installed two copies of window in C: & D: (it might))

knight is right...put the xp cd in the drive and restart your computer, making sure your bios is set to look at your cd-rom for boot before hd0. press any key when told to do so to start the xp setup routine....this will bring up a blue screen, just follow the setup routine and be sure to format....
