I installed xp pro on a computer that had xp home. I did the format thingy and now it asks for a choice of operating systems at startup. I don't have xp home installed anymore and it still asks for it. Please help?

Go to c drive, the boot.ini file and edit the one you don't want out. Be careful you get the right one.

Reformat your computer and make sure you do a full format. That will erase both XP Home and Pro which you have on your computer. Then do a fresh install of XP Pro.

If you are confused with that simple explanation I suggest you get local help as it appears you don't want to be messing around in the boot.ini file. No offense. Rgds.

DO NOT FORMAT, AND DO NOT EDIT BOOT.INI.
Here is how to fix it:

Go to your control panel and click open the system icon. Now go to the [advanced] tab. Here at the bottom it will say:
Startup and recovery. Click the [settings] button open.
The top will say:
System startup:
Default operating system. There should be a box with a pulldown arrow on the right side. Pull it down and find:
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional"/fastdetect.
Put this in the box for default operating system.
You can set the time display of the choice of systems here too.
Or you can manually edit the boot.ini file from here. It is much easier to do this way. Just delete the operating system you don't have anymore out of the file and close it back up.

I just seem to find this way easier. I had problems with my XP at one point so I went in and set it to default to Win98 until I could straighten out my problem with XP.
I'm still learning XP as I have only had it installed for about 2 months, but I figured if I am going to fix computers with it installed on them, then I better learn what makes XP tick. I still have a long way to go but I learn quick as you can see by my website. I have alot of updating there to do to as XP needs to be added on many subjects.

Per, my avatar says what it does because, yes WE always do have the answers. Maybe one individual might not have the answer on their own, but when we put our heads all together, or call in back-up (as we have been known to do), then yes we can come up with the right answer between us. I have learned alot from Computing.net, win95/98 forum. I hope to learn just as much hanging out up here as I was told by my good friend Derek that this is now the most frequented forum on the board. I have been around here since 2/2000 and some of my friends and I have come to call this place: pc net.
