I have had my computer 14 months and this morning when I booted up this program showed up called CHKDSK and scanned my computer. Where did it come from and how do I access it if I wanted to use it again. It isn't in my system tools. Thank You

CHKDSK same as Scandisk in older versions of windows. To access it ? :
start --> run---> cmd
then just type CHKDSK and ENTER

chkdsk is a Hard drive checking DOS oreinted program that checks your hard drive for error and/or problems, it usually loads when your computer is shutdown improperly, but you can access this program at anytime by getting to the safe mode prompt and choosing safe mode with command prompt, or by booting with you OEM cd and going to repair, then one at the command prompt type chkdsk and hit enter

you can only run chkdsk at boot up. when trying to start it under windows it will give you error msg saying it does not have absolute access to the hard drive but will run on the next boot.
use scandisk under windows, it's more powerfull anyway.

Rick: yes you can, I did it an hour ago, what you can not do is chkdsk /f that will you give you an error msg.

On the boot select recovery console. select the system, Usually 1. enter password, if none press enter. Type in chkdsk /r.and let it run. Space between k and /.

If you just want to run it occasionally, click on My computer, right click on C drive, and chose Properties. Then click on Tools. Then click on error checking. This is the basic chkdsk. It has 3 phases. It probably is not a good idea to check "fix or repair errors" because that could take several hours.

I run chkdsk /r once a week from the recovery console just to keep things in order. It takes 30 minutes.

CHKDSK is an internal DOS command as opposed to an external command. Internal commands are built into the command interpreter, whereas they don't actually have an executable associate with them. External DOS commands have their own executables associate with them. An example of an DOS external command is FORMAT which has format.exe associated with it. When your type CHKDSK, the computer reads a portion of the command interpreter to find out what to do. When you type FORMAT, the computer reads a file called FORMAT.exe to find out what to do.
