Comment:

I just ran CHKDSK (the XP version of scandisk) and it completed but it didn't tell me if I had any errors or not. Does this mean that it took care of all the problems if there were any or that there were no problems or just what?? Anyone know?

(I told it to correct any errors automatically, but I still would have liked to known if it found any errors.)

Chkdsk will list as it goes along doing the scan if it encounters any errors. More often than not, though, the scan goes so quick you can't tell if it flashed any errors on the screen or not.

Just keep a close eye on it next time.

you should run chkdsk from the command line: click start -> run -> command (or cmd)

this will only list the errors. If you want to have chkdsk fix any errors it finds, you have to use the /f flag. chkdsk can't run when xp is running though, so if you run the command, it will mark it so that it occurs during the next reboot

Thank you both for your replies. First off, tadboy, I watched it closely and it didn't list any errors. Where exactly are these error messages found? On the blue screen right as it is going through the 5 steps? And David, I don't know much about using commands. The reason I'm wanting to run CHKDSK is because I'm always having to shut down my computer by pushing the power button when I run Netmeeting because Netmeeting always freezes after one of us hangs up. I want to get rid of any errors that this may cause. On my other computer (running Windows 98) scandisk comes up if I shut down the computer improperly, and I've noticed that XP doesn't do that, and it just returns to Windows.

It'll start running the scan, you know, showing the percent complete. And if it hits an error, it lists a message right underneath saying what kind of error and what it's doing about it.

I haven't found many errors with NTFS. In fact, it's been very rare.

Thank you for that information. I guess they have really improved Windows since Windows 98 then. I feel relieved knowing that by me shutting off the power with the power button (which I hate doing so much) I am not hurting anything, and if I am, it will correct itself. At least, this is what I am gathering from these posts.
