the disk check tool says there are index errors = running chkdsk at startup doesn't fix them or even identify them. not sure what to do next:)

try right clicking on the drive and go to properties and uncheck drive indexing...see if that helps

It indicates there are errors. Do you let that chkdsk process, at starup, run to its completion or do you "hit any key" to stop the repair process?

no, I let it finish -- it doesn't identify any errors, but the disk checking tool and norton disk doctor both do. They can't fix them because it's and NTFS drive, and asks if I want to run the disk check utility at startup. The rest you know :)

I'll try disabling the indexing service and see what happens.

The chkdsk that autocheck runs is not as thorough as the real checkdisk. I'd suggest you boot to the recovery console and then run chkdsk /r on the drive in question. This should clean the drive .

cheers

Starting the Windows Recovery Console
To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:
Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.
