I am trying to run chkdsk on my computer but it is telling me that.

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
CHKDSK is not available for NTFS drives.

I also have a FAT drive on the computer and it states the same thing expect it puts FAT in place of NTFS.

I also tried right clicking on the drive in my computer and using the tools tab to check for error. However it never does anything after I click the button.

I have ran virus and spyware scans using multiple vendors.

I have ran sfc /scannow. Also running sfc /purgecache and then sfc /scannow.

I did a restore using the windows cd setup on boot.

Nothing has worked. I really don't want to do a complete format and reinstall but it looks like it may be my only hope. I tried running defrag and it tells me there are errors and I need to run chkdsk.

" I also tried right clicking on the drive in my computer and using the tools tab to check for error. However it never does anything after I click the button. "

You should get a message to the effect that the Error-checking will take place next time you Re-Start your Computer - nothing does happen until you do that

I get nothing. I let the computer set for hours after clicking that button and no message ever appears.

That url is just for people that do not know how to run chkdsk. Not for fixing problems with chkdsk. I have checked MS board for this error and have not found any posts.

OK Glashtin.

In doing more checking of your error, I found this-
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx

And in that page, it says that there is one type
of command that states "The disk must be locked", and that is chkdsk /r

My limited elderly mind thinks that is the clue-- How to lock the disk.

If this is done--
/f
Fixes errors on the disk. The disk must be locked. If chkdsk cannot lock the drive,
a message appears that asks you if you want to check the drive the next time you
restart the computer.

If this does not go anywhere, report back.

Or maybe using
chkdsk /x
is the one.

/x : Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes the functionality of /f.

I have tried all the combos. Even

C:\>chkdsk /f /v /r /x /i /c
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
CHKDSK is not available for NTFS drives.

It never asks me if I want to check on reboot like it used to.

It apears no one has had this error before and no one knows how to fix it so I guess I am stuck formating and starting a new.

Thanks for trying.

Tim
