Hello, After running chkdsk in command prompt this is what I get. "Correcting errors in the volume bitmap" and right under that is "Windows found problems with file system." Then I try using the command chkdsk /f which tells me I have to reboot for it to fix the problem. I do this and it said problem fix, but when I run it again the same problem shows up. I had a friend who is running xp as well try this and his reported the same error. So is this normal or am I not doing something right. Is there another way to check your disk for errors outside of windows while having ntfs partition? I am going to have another friend check his later tonight.
Any help appreicated

Do you have a windows98-bootdisk?
Then try booting with that and run scandisk! You can download a bootdisk-image at bootdisk.com

I have the same problem, can not use the bootdisk 98 since my harddisk is NTFS formated
Please help me!!!!!!

We also have the same or similar errors with CHKDSK. We found this problem on several servers in our company. In two cases these errors result in a major fault of the file system. CHKDSK /F "repairs" the security id's
of the whole files. After this "repair" all
rights were missing.
We also have the error message "correcting errors in the volume bitmap".
Now we're working at this problem for about
8 weeks. There are two calls open and we hope
Microsoft Munich or Siemens IT Service may help us. But at the moment, they couldn't tell us the reason for this behaviour.
(Now the calls are at a higher priority -
MS Priority or MS Premier Support)The only thing i've found in the past days is a Q-article from Microsoft.
(support.microsoft.com - Q187941).
It describes the functionality of CHKDSK in detail.
One part of the document describes a bad behaviour of CHKDSK under NT and W2K."...and is prone to falsely reporting errors when it's executed in read-only mode.." !!
Now we're waiting of a resolution or an explanation of this behaviour. Because we
really had some severe errors.
If we get a response or better a solution,
i will reply to your message again.Rainer

I get the same exact problem. I've also noticed that running chkdsk multiple times can give different results.

Oh and when I run Norton Disk Doctor 2002 I get no errors reported at all. Usually if I run chkdsk enough times the "Correcting errors in the volume bitmap" will go away, so I think its a phantom error message caused by a write to the disk while chkdsk is executing. It seems to happen on my system disk the most which makes sense since that is the disk that is most active.
