i have a strange problem that i hope someone on thi forum can help me with
intermittently i will hear a chime go off
(2 tones) after the first tone my mouse will freeze
afer the second tone the mouse will unfreeze
i've looked up the sound to find out it means something is being disconnected and reconnected at the usb port
has anyone else experienced this?
any help would be appreciated i have put up with this for months and this is my first cry for help
thanks ahead of time
Nuno

I'm assuming you're using a USB mouse? I've got the same problem (MS Intellimouse optical), but haven't confirmed the solution... yet. Mine cuts off (chimes to indicate disconnect) and then again a few seconds later (reconnect) At first I thought it was a USB thing, but I tried using an adapter and plugging it into my PS2 port where it still does the same thing. You probably don't want to hear this, but I'm guessing that the mouse is going bad. I've gotten used to that mouse while playing UT, and playing with my Logitech optical mouse SUCKS! For now, I've got the intellimouse plugged into the USB port, and the logitech mouse plugged into the PS2 port. Both are active. During game play I use my intellimouse, but if it flakes out on me during gameplay, I can quickly grab my logitech and and continue playing till the MS one starts to work again. When I find the answer, I'll post back here, Hope you'll do the same.
(Just a FYI, this was a replacement mouse, the first one died 2 weeks after I got it and was replaced directly by MS)
Good luck!

It is just possible that you have several active USB device at the precise moment that your require to use the MOUSE hence a chime.
Each USB device consume a certain %age of the total resource, cameras, scanners etc. when idle, however this can jump alarmingly when they are active. or example my WebCam wants 74% of the resources when using video and sometimes, if other devices are active the camera won't run.
That said, a recent 'security' update from Microsoft fixed this problem for me!

I wish the answer was that easy. Unfortunately I have this problem even though I only have one USB peripheral attached. (M$ Intellimouse Optical) Also, the problem occurs even when I attach to the PS2 port, so I think the mouse is just going bad.
