Hi, I am fed up of buying expensive ink jet cartridges for my epson 680 that last 5 minuets!
Has anyone found a printer that is cheap to run and reasonable quality? I do a fair bit of printing (not photos.) but I need good picture quality. I don't like being ripped off with tiny amounts of ink in the cartridges.
Thank you.

If its not the printer, but the cartridges that you don't like paying for, try going to a non-OEM cartridge. I have found this site's qualify of cartridges excellent:

Have a look at the Canon ip4000 - just picked up another one for £uk100. Individual decent size tanks; reasonably cheap branded, but happily accepts decent generic at about £5 each. Cannot fault quality + auto duplexing & prints CDs.

I could not find an Epson model 680. Is it a 670?

The 670's just have 2 ink tanks...1 black and 1 multi-color. Does your's just have 2?

If so....get a color printer that uses INDIVIDUAL ink tanks....the more, the better - 6 would be great. However, 4 color tanks...plus 1 for black...would be better than you have now. You can find Canon's and Epson's in this category for less than $100.

Anyways....this allows you to only replace certian colors as they deplete. Now...you have to replace the ENTIRE color cartridge when only Part of it is actually depleted.

Individual replacement ink carts. can be gotten for less than $10.

Anyways.....if you need inexpensive decent color printing at home....that's the way to go.

ALSO.....regardless of what you do....go into your printer settings then Preferences...and change the Quality setting to "Draft" ... or what whatever setting is below the Normal/Default quality setting.

This alone will use 30% to 50% less ink. When you need to print a Photo, or need really High quality color, change the setting to normal or high JUST FOR THOSE PRINTS.

The Draft setting is very adeqate for day-to-day utility prints (stuff to read...etc).

Also...for printing 4x6 color prints....go to Wal-Mart. You can even submit them online and pick them up when you get there. Only cost around .19 each...which is cheaper than doing it yourself.

Thank's all,
It's the first time I have used the forum and you have given me plenty to think about.
Perhaps I am living in the past but to pay £4 G.B.P. (7.30$) for a cartridge makes me think about a more economical printer ! They last me about 3 weeks. I think somebody is making allot of money,
Thank you again,
Robin.
