how can i make windows xp default to a certain window view setting for any folder i open - as a list for instance. I'd be happy to have every folder display like this but i cant find how to make it work.

Or even better, is it possible to make certains folders which contain certain files always display in a certain way. I know there is such a function but i dont like the choice of "tiles" for folders with mp3s which xp seems to default to. I prefer the list or "details"

I ask this because im tired of changing every folder view setting everytime i open it and also im tired of it never remembering this view setting.

Go to Control Panel>Folder Options>View and make sure the box "Save view for each Folder" is ticked! Once you have changed a view for a particular folder, it should always open this way!
