I have a question that may or may not be simple (i'm going with not simple).
I have a customer who wants to change the name on his computer. Now we're not talking about the username, or even the computer name or user name. Basically if you open up the command prompt, it'll say, for instance on mine: C:\Documents and Settings\HomeRow
How do I get it to say something different than HomeRow??? I have searched and found a couple similar programs that say they change the Owner of the Computer, and they show the current owner as "HomeRow" but when I change it and check it or reboot and check it, the cmd prompt still shows HomeRow instead of whatever else I want to make it.
If I go into Ctrl Panel to change/edit user accounts, I can change the user to whatever and it does not affect this. When I go into Computer Mgmt and go to System Tools, Local Users & Groups & then Users, it shows "HomeRow" for the Name, and "William" for Full Name. The William part is what changes when I change the user name in the user options in ctrl panel. I can change the "HomeRow" in there to whatever, but it still will not change the cmd prompt showing D & S\HomeRow.
How do I change this. My customer's computer shows up as 1 thing on their network and changing all this stuff is not affecting it (dunno exactly how he has this all setup), and he would like to change it if possible. But he said it will work either way, so this is more for me being anal when it comes to not being able to fix problems that SEEM simple hehe :D
Also, I was poking around in the registry and under Hkey_Current_User\Volatile Environment, there is a key named HOMEPATH and it has \Documents and Settings\HomeRow in it. That is the only reference to D & S\HomeRow w/o having a bunch of other stuff after it in the entire registry...but I don't exactly feel like hosing my OS today.
Any help is appreciated.

This sounds pretty simple, is a bit complex though. If you enter the CMD-Prompt in Windows XP, it shows your name after ......settings\YOURNAME>. Go to Ctrl Pnl -> User Accounts, add a new user with the desired name as an administrator. Then log off (completely, not just switch users), enter with the newly created user, go to Ctrl pnl -> User Accounts, delete the other account. This should solve the problem.

Simple go into accessories, right click on command prompt and change
start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
to
start in: c:\

I found that a XP laptop I bought for my wife was still running services under the previous owners account even though I had deleted the user and was logged in as my wife. I even went thru the registry with a fine tooth comb.
I did a "repair" from the XP cd and when asked entered the new information. I did have to reregister but that was no problem. Now everything runs under my wife's account now and the previous owner is no where to be found.

Here you go...
Change Registered Owner In Registry
HKLM\Software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion
Change registered organisation
Change registered owner
