I am a ex-pat living in Germany I want to buy a computer here but I want it to be in English.

1) Can I change the language to English?

2) Is it possible to have English and German? Like two admins(me) one in English and one in German?

A really handy feature of Windows XP that I've recently used is the ability to add other language packs. My wife & I recently took a couple trips to Russia, and it was handy to be able to open and edit documents that were in Cyrillic type rather than English.
Start in Control Panel (click Start, Settings, Control Panel) and open "Regional and Language options." Click the "Languages" tab, then click the "Details" button. On the "Settings" tab click the "Add..." button, and choose the language you would like to add from the drop-down list. Click OK to make the change, and you will now have an additional language available to type with.

The only aspect of a computer that is likely to be in German is the BIOS. For someone living in Germany it wont take much to learn what the German phrases mean - most might even be in English because there is no German equivalent.

What you will need though an English version of Windows if you intend running Windows. I am sure any German supplier will be able to get you an English version of Windows if you ask them.

The biggest problem you are likely to come across is the keyboard. German keyboards have a slightly different layout than English ones and include German punctuation characters that do not appear in English. However, obtaining a UK keyboard shouldn't be a problem either.

So can I simply overwrite the German Windows XP with the English version? or should I do it as suggested in the first post? Also is it possible to have both languages one for one users and another for the other?

The method described in the first post will just allow you to type in a foreign language. It will do nothing to change other things like the items in Control Panel, predefined folder names, menu items, help files etc.

You will need an English version of Windows unless you a prepared to learn some basic German and you cannot switch between one and the other except as described in post 1.

I just been reading about a Multi-Lingual pack for Windows XP that allows multiple users in different language.

The pack is called Office XP Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack will that work? If so how do I find out if I got this pack?

I have XP Pro on my current computer but if I get a new PC it most likely be the home edition. I have no cd for XP Pro is there anyway I can burn a copy from my current PC?

Also how hard is it to overwrite the home edition with PRO?

Are there any instructions on how to configure two user profiles with two different languages?

I have seen a fair few PC's in my time both in the UK and abroad (Germany included) and have yet to see a BIOS not written in English, often badly I grant you !
