I started with one hard drive with Windows XP installed on it. I had an extra hard drive, and I wanted a fresh installation of Windows XP, so I added the new hard drive and installed a new copy of Windows XP on it. Now I wanted to use the first hard drive only for documents and the new hard drive only for programs, so I deleted the windows directory of the first hard drive because I no longer needed it to have an OS. The problem is that Disk Management lists the first hard drive as the System Volume. I'd like to make it as if the first hard drive never had an OS on it in the first place. Is it possible to change the System Volume to the new hard drive? Physically it's the slave and the old one is the master, but that shouldn't matter.

IT DOES MATTER!!! You need the NEW one to be the MASTER and the old one to be the SLAVE. What it's trying to do is read the master as the one with everything on it, i believe. I had that same problem and just changing the physical status worked for me. Hope I help! :)

I have the same problem! My new drive is configured as master and the old drive is slave; fresh install of XP on the new drive, but the old drive (with the old XP still there) is now the system volume. I want to get rid of everything on the old drive and use it for storage. What can I do???
