changing startup programs

Ok I remember doing this ages ago but now I can't remember how I did it. This computer and one of my other ones have a lot of programs that startup when I turn on the computer, like messengers etc. i know there is a way to stop them loading up on startup by signing in and going to options but I know there is an easier way for stopping multiple programs at one time, can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks!
