I have had this problem where if I change my resolution to 800 x 600 to play a classic game, when I switch back to 1280 x 1024 all my icons are in the wrong place. Well, I did some searching on this site and the Internet and I found a solution. What I do is save my icons with iconsaver (can be downloaded and purchased for $5 at www.iconsaver.com), switch resolution, play my game then switch back and they are all in the right place. I thought this was way worth the money not to have this hassle. You would think that windows would just put the icons back the way you had them before, but it doesn't.

marcusgi, You could also use "Icon Restore" which is totally Free at the link below.

Hi Tufenuf,
Remember how we discussed this issue last year :-)
Strange Desktop Icons Arrangement

It is by design. What is the big deal? Do you arrange the icons in some special order? (edit)
I said it is by design, it is actuall by necessity.
You have more realestate when using a higher resolution. Icons are smaller at higher resolutions therfore more can fit in a given space.
I suppose you could use a third party utility to restore settings when changing resolutions. IMO that just needlessly complicates things.

Usually when something like this happen, I powered down the PC and wait awhile for a cold restart. In my case I always get back my fine-tuned desktop icons layout. I honestly can offer no explanation why it works for me. This is just another example for "That's Windows" category.
