The disk-duplicating method is recommended for most preinstallation environments because it involves the least effort from your production line. In this method, you duplicate the disk after running Sysprep. You must have special equipment or software for duplicating hard disks.
Because you are copying a full installation of Windows, the master computer and destination computers must have compatible hardware abstraction layers (HALs). For example, if the master computer is Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI)-based, then the destination computer must also use ACPI. However, the processors and RAM do not need to be the same.
but if you have full version off WindowsXp you can install normal on you new laptop end call Microsoft Support for open new Activ key

Im very sorry, but you're not giving enough information. What exactly is this "problem", and why does your friend say that it cannot be done? what is the program you would use to make this image file?
