Just had a question, I'm not sure if someone would know this: Do you happen to know if eBay identify's their users by an LAN IP or WAN IP address? My "dork" brother messed up my account and now I'm trying to fix things he did and get everything up and running again. I have a dynamic IP through Qwest and wasnt sure if its enough just to change the WAN or if they would notice me by the LAN?? Also if you could assist me in the steps of how exactly I can change it and what I need to do exactly. I really want to avoid going through Qwest because they will charge a montly fee. Any information would be much appreciated gal's and bro's. Thank you so much!!

eBay identify their users by username.

mattie is exactly right. What kinds of things are "Messed up" on your eBay account?
This post is familiar...

Web sites identify you by a cookie. Maybe your brother deleted your cookies. You could try contacting Ebay, they should be able to help you.

mattie hit the nail on the head.
Here's a question that WILL clear things up - are you able to log into your account from a public computer or a system that isn't on the same network?
If you are trying to do this because your account has been NARUed, you are sh!t outta luck.

First off...your internet provider will assign you an IP address via DHCP (or Static…but you would know about that)...this is how you are able to communicate on the internet. Yes the account holder can be tracked via the IP address on your wan from any site you visit...but its a little more complicated then that.
I mean check out computing.net...every time you post something, you see your IP address right there...this way CN can track offensive and illegal posts...now rather they take the time to do it or not and what laws are involved are a different story.
It will do you no good to change your LAN IP, that’s just so your computers can talk internally...they all go out through your WAN and use that 1 IP address from Quest.
More tech savvy people know how to mask their IP...but I’m not about to get into that on here...there are 2 sides to every story and rather its good or bad to want to hide your IP....
Now that being said...what are you so worried about on eBay that makes you want to change your IP? whatever was done has already been logged on EBay’s servers as coming from your IP...but again, it really depends on what you were doing....did you rip someone off? Did he really visit porn? if you really did something bad on eBay, then they will track you via the account on eBay and your IP address...but I doubt you did anything that bad to warrant them coming after you....or did you? In that case computing.net and every other web site you've been to now has your IP.
Google IP addresses and read up on networking.

Mattie 'is' correct, you are identified by your user name. Your user name is in the cookie for that web site. If the cookie is deleted, you cannot be recognized.

WOW, thats all I can say. I guess I've been doing it wrong all these years. This message posted using 100% recycled electrons.

Web sites could not use IP addresses to identify people because dialup users can get a new IP every time they logon. That's why cookies are used.

He will still get an IP when he dials up (if that was what he was doing) that ip address given (rather changing or not) will still be associated with his account and username/password (ISP side)
So if he connected yesterday at noon, he got an IP address, then he surfed to EBay, it was recorded as coming from quest, then all eBay has to do is contact his ISP and say who used this IP address at noon yesterday... his ISP will see his username and account was given that specific IP.

Stryker, web sites use cookies and not IP addresses to identify the user. Ask Justin.

Obviously, tomzie isn't that concerned, as he hasn't posted back. I still think this is related to that other post, just reworded...unfortunately, I can't find the darn thing.

Well, I'm greatfull for your "over concern" of why I had the question about my IP. Its funny that stryker was a little more concerned than my own Mother would be. And I'm sorry to say that NO, it wasn't no porn, and No it wasn't because I ripped someone off and none of those things. Usually the person who thinks of those things making the accusations is the one who does those things, otherwise the mind doesn't usually think of things it doesn't perform.
Eitherway, I appreciate your help and concern. I'm sorry I don't have a huge exciting story for you of WHY I wanted my IP changed and what ebay identify's their users by. Who ever said "ebay user ID" is pretty funny. The true story is my account was suspended because of my brothers actions, and ebay sent me an email saying that the account with this IP --- --- --- --- has been suspended and no longer available for reinstatement. Even though I think it would be possible to retrieve my old account (which I would like to do because it has 300 feedbacks with almost 100% feedback rating), I probably will have to set up a new account. I just don't want them to end my account when they notice its the same IP address. I've already tried contacting them and explaining the situation with my brother, but they have been pretty ignorant and won't even listen to anything of what happened. The absolute best senario would be if I could get to use my same account, but I think it would be impossible (unless a computer genius knew) to open up my original old account which is now closed. So I'll probably just change the WAN IP and hopefully they won't connect it with me and end the account again. Anyone have any other suggestions or thoughts? I own a wheel business and sale chrome alloy wheels and low profile tires, and maybe I can just start using a different public website as well, ebay is the bomb when it comes to mass sells though. Oh well, any imput would be much appreciated. Have a DANG nice day!!

By the way, I can tell you that I don't know half the stuff you do about computers as you can probably tell. But I do know one thing, when ebay sent me an email saying that the account was suspended it also said the account linked to this IP -------- and it listed my IP. So I'm guessing it identify's me and its users by their IP's and not cookies or maybe both, I'm not sure. Anyways, later.

It's actually both Tomzie. When you logon they identify you with a cookie. But if they have to ban someone, then they resort to banning IP address(s). If the banned person does not have a dedicated address, then they will ban a group of addresses that the IP uses, which includes the banned person's. That's unfortunate, because a lot of innocent people can be affected. I wonder if that's what happened to you.

A correction to above. 'When you enter a web site they identify you with a cookie', not 'when you logon'.

Thanks Ham30. I just didn't know what ebay meant or did when they were calling or labeling me by my name and IP address right after recieving that email from them. They also used my IP at another different time saying they thought it was linked to a different account, and this was the only thing which was connecting me with the other account was my IP. Is it possible ebay has a different system set up then other websites? So to resolve the situation, I have changed my WAN IP and also I need to change my cookies right? All I do to change my cookies is to delete cookies, right? Is this the only thing? To any "computer genius" out their on Computing.Net, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how I could possibly get back my old ebay account to active and running status now that its previously been suspended? I was wondering if their is any other possible way of getting my old account active besides going through ebay and kissing their ass. Any suggestions or idea's would be cool. Thanks bud.

Also Ham30, So what do I need to change exactly to not be identified when visiting the site again? Just my WAN address and cookies or more? Thanks

"I was wondering if their is any other possible way of getting my old account active besides going through ebay and kissing their ass.". Well, you didn't want to contact your ISP to change your IP address, and you don't want to contact eBay to reactivate your account. Contacting eBay is the only you can have your account reactivated. Have you thought of actually calling them, being cooperative and mature about the situation, calmly explaining what happened and requesting that your account be reactivated? I doubt it.
What I'm wondering though, is if you're using XP, or 2000 (Compaq isn't an OS) with separate logins, how did your brother get your eBay account password in the first place? You may want to deal with that little issue before contacting eBay, as they may want assurance that access to your account has been limited only to the account holder..meaning you.

Well... I doubt you can answer someones questions without always giving a smart-ass reply tied to the end. Don't you love those "smart-ass" people who always have to answer peoples questions with "smart-ass" replies (YOU)??? I actually can't stand people who for some odd reason in life feel it's necessary to "always" leave some kind of smart ass remark when answering any questions. They are few and far between, but most people can't stand those types of people (you) and usually won't admit it. YES, idiot. I have already contacted ebay, and YEs idiot, they I guess are so busy they don't seem to return emails from many of their customers. Otherwise I wouldn't be on here asking the question probably, right? I really don't think I would be asking questions and for peoples help if the answer was so simple as contacting ebay and getting my account up and active again, do you? Anyways, if your name starts with the letter; "Jennifer Sumn" I would greatly appreciate it if you didn't answer or communicate with any of mine, my friends or families emails or questions on this forum. Your help will be greatly missed, but please don't reply. More then just a few of us agree that you have some kind of "issue" with yourself and feel its necessary always to try and give a smart ass reply like it gives you some kind of self-esteem boost or makes you feel like your some big smart person by shooting down people to help build up your own ego. I never really understood your type. Its impossible to just give a simple answer without some kind of lame-ass response or jerk-off comment on the side. And you know dang well what I'm talkin about, so don't play dumb and please don't try to give me one of your pathetic excuses for a "defense come-back". I'm done with the crap you have dished out with all of your so-called help. You've left one of your little smart-ass replies and "nosey" (more information then needed) remarks on every single question we have asked. Later.

tomzie, I find it very sad that you're so defensive. You come here for advice and assistance. That's what you've been given. (In both threads.) It's unfortunate if you feel it's a personal attack when people (not JUST myself) tell you what needs to be done to remedy your situation. Life isn't always fair. Accepting that is part of growing up. :)

"My "dork" brother"
... seems to run in the family - actually, compared to eBay conning and prissy, strident whining, "dork" is practically complimentary.
Consider pulling your head from your ass long enough to draw a quick breath & realize that computers are the *least* of your problems
If you'd put as much effort into overcoming your obvious failings of personality as you've spent in smarting off to forum members, you might possibly be mistaken for a human being (if the light was dim enough)
Saying that XP is the most stable MS OS is like saying that asparagus is the most articulate vegetable
