Ok i know how to change file extentions just by right clicking and doing rename. But I had to change a .lwtp to a .zip and that worked fine, I did my changes to the file and when it came time to change it back, it only changes the name, not the file. I followed the instructions on what to do down to the fine details and it still wont work.I need to change it back. Can anyone help?, If so thanks.

With the My Computer window open. Goto Tools then folder options. Click the View Tab then uncheck the box that says "hide file extensions for known file types", and click ok. Now you can see the full filename with extension and you can change it to what you want.

F2 usually works.

Or,

rem somefile.ex1 somefile.ex3

In Windows the file extensions is how Windows knows which prograzm to use to open a specific file.

If you change file.doc to file.zip you have only changed the extension but not the type of file that it is. In this case the file is still a MSWord document that will try to open with your zipping utility. Since it is not a zipped file the program won't know what to do with it.

So, do not confuse changing the file extension with changing a file or converting a file to another file type.

Since you have only changed the name of the file from file.doc to file.zip then you should be able to change it back as easily from file.zip to file.doc.

Also note that when changing a file's extension you can wind up leaving that file useless (although I have always been able to change it back).

The only time that I had found a reason to change a file's extension was to get over on Outlook at my work's mailbox. It would not take any files with the extension of .exe so I changed it to .doc and then changed it back once received at work. This is about the only useful purpose of changing a file's extension.

Hi Bryan,

In winders and DOS, rem is remark.

Another reason to change an ext is for using debug on an exe.
