Hi all,
I have a hardrive which has 2 partitions. Partition C is for OS and partition D is for storage. Recntly, my OS screwed up and I had to do new install. Now after new install, drive letters have swapped. OS is now on D drive, storage is on C drive.

Is there any way I can change these back? I've seen posts saying it's not possible but surely there must be away! I've tried editing registry and was successfully able to rename storage drive to Z. However, changing boot back to C, caused system to hang on boot.

Now, I don't mind re-installing windows since it's already fresh install. At install, even if I could change partition names here. This way partitions would be named correctly before XP install. For me, the storage partition appears as C, OS as D. If I could swap these at install, would be ok. Is there any boot dics that allows this?

Can partition Magic help? I heard it has drivemapper which might work but can't find info about it.

Cheers
Shav

if you don't mind doing it, then just reinstall the operating system, this time delete all partitions and recreate them to your likings. (make sure all personal data are backed up).

sure it can be done but manually editing the registry for all paths will take years since regedit is lacking auto replace capabilities :-)

Cheers Mattie. Ideally this would be the best and easiset solution. Unfortuately, the storage dirbe contains over 100Gb of data which I have nowhere to backup. If all other options fail, this is the approach I'll have to take, but you know of any other options, please let me know. Cheers

try this:

change the drive letter of the storage partition ... let's say to f: ... now boot from you xp cd, delete the partition holding your operating system, create a new partition which now should come up as C: and assign all free disk space (or create yet another small partition that you may use to ghost the new installation).

important: do not touch the storage partition!

the downside: this new partition will not be at the beginning of the hard drive (in physical terms) where you can expect better performance.

Hey Mattie,
that's exactly what I tried to do. In the registry I changed the storage partition under Mounted Devices to Z. I then booted off XP CD but it still come up as C. Is there something I need to do with MBR or boot sectors, anything like that? Cheers

I think the info can be obtained from the recovery console and run DISKPART.
