Comment:

I just dug a computer out of storage that I haven't used for a year or so and am trying to open it up, but some of the Windows files seem to be corrupted (e.g., l_intl.nls, ntoskrnl.exe, etc.) and have to be re-installed/repaired using the original XP CD. However, every time I boot it up and try to run the "repair" utility, the system prompts me for the Administrator password, which I don't think I ever even set, because I was the only one using the computer at the time . . . (duh).

My question: How do I change/set/re-set the Administrator password in BIOS (which I *do* remember the password for)?

Thanks in advance!

you can reset BIOS password by opening the box and finding reset BIOS jumper on the motherboard, the user manual for the machine can help you to locate it.

thanks for your message. i DO remember the BIOS password -- it's the *administrator* password that i never set/don't remember. do you mean that they're both re-set by doing as you suggest?

If you asking for the winxp password there is nothing to do in the BIOS you can not change win pass from there.

no, not the winxp password, the *administrator* password -- at the recovery console, it prompts me for the *administrator* password.

If you did not set an administrator password then just leave it blank and press Enter. If that doesn't get you into recoveryconsole then you did set a password and just cannot remember it.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Google is your friend!

First result will answer your question. You'll need to download a CD image which you will burn to a CD and boot to. It has tools which allow you to erase the current Administrator password so it is blank. You'll then be able to log into the Recovery Console.

PS: The Administrator password is the Windows XP password.
