after being hacked, i've changed my admin account to a limited account. Before, i had my tv tuner's program to be loaded into the system tray so i can use the remote control to start watching. But now that i'm a limited account, the tv tuner's program can't find the hardware ("no video capture device found"). I've gone through the registry as an admin and given myself access to everything, but i still can't get it to work. I have to navigate through the start menu and right-click on the software in order to "run as" the admin, but now my remote control is useless. I've tried the CACLS thing, and that doesn't work either.

It is likely that the program is a legacy 16-bit application. "Limited" users cannot run these apps by default.

I would switch back to a normal admin account, but make sure you aren't logging on as "administrator" (make another user). Then, under computer management, remove your user from the "administrators" group, and add them to the "power users" group.

This will make sure you can still get around, but can't do TOTAL damage to the system.

Also, just changing your user group isn't the solution. You need to close up ports on your firewall and turn off services you aren't using. Also, setting complex passwords for every account is a good idea. You can still use TweakUI to log on automatically when you start up, but the account is still technically password protected.

i have windows xp home, and the power users group is not available. I can only pick between admin and limited account. Win XP has so many backdoors...like did you know that if you turn off the guest account, it's still active...but they just hide it from the welcome screen?

the reason i don't want to re-install is because i have been tweaking my computer like crazy. not only are unnecessary services disabled, i've also disabled services that some portions of my computer need (I turn them on when I need to access certain things, but then i quickly turn them off). My firewall blocks everything...I have a specific line for each program...like I will disable outgoing port 80, and only enable those programs that really need it to access that port...

the way i switched from admin to limited was to create a new administrator account, and then modified my account to become a limited account. All software was installed using my current (limited) account, so i figure that it should somehow work. MusicMatch works (for other limited users, they can't access it because they need admin rights). The tv tuner software is rather new, considering that the product is brand new.

i've already given myself permission throughout the registry...but my tv tuner still can't find my tv tuner card :(
