Change Partition size

I have a C and D partition. Is there any way to change the size of my partitions without formating my drives... some way to move the contents of D and make C larger? XP just takes up too much room.

The best way to go about it would be to use a program called partition magic. If you have a fat formatted drive it won't be a problem but if XP is on an NTFS partition you'll need the latest version of partition magic which I think is 7. Hope that helps

Where can I get that? Download.com only has version 7 and it is $70 if I actually want a working version. Is there any freeware I can use?

There are some free 'Partition Managers' that will do the job. However they make the job really difficult and time consuming. I wouldn't recommend them unless you are a techy type.

Control Panel/Admin tools/Computer management/Disk management. You can modify the size of partitions and even span partitions across several physical drives. It's pretty neat. Check out windows help once you're in computer management. And it won't cost you anything.

You can format merge create and delete partitions and even change which partition is active and change the file system. But there is nowhere in there to change the size of a partition. The simplest way is Partition Magic! Do a search for Pqmagic.exe as this is the only file you need to download. One way to do it is to Copy it to your C root drive then boot into dos with a windows boot disk. Navigate to the c drive in dos then type in pqmagic. The Pqmagic.exe file is only about 50k so do a search it must be on a site somewhere.

Here is the answer to doing it for free:
"You cannot extend the current system or boot partitions."
This is from the command prompt execution of DISKPART in XP Pro.
