I am trying to help my friend who has run out of PCI Slots and needs one for a USB Card, so I suggested the only way was to take out his Network Card and get an ISA Network Card for his high speed modem 10/100, he did get 2 cards by Kingston but cannot get on to the Internet??? do I need a driver I thought XP would have them, are there any settings in the BIOS that I have to change in order to run these ISA Cards???

i had an isa NIC in my old pc, and xp installed the driver automatically after reboot. go check device manager to see if there are any conflicts

I did check the Device Manager and there are no Kingston Network Card showing, so I guess that means the network cards are not working then.

make sure the card is inserted securely. also check for 'other devices' in device manager. if still not detected by xp, probably defective. tell your friend to keep his pci configuration the way it was and to go get a usb hub

Add-in cards don't really have settings in the BIOS - how could they? (I think this was brought up when you were putting in that ISA vidcard??) One can reserve settings for legacy devices in order to get around conflicts, but you would need to know which settings to reserve.

Frequently an ISA NIC will have its own configuration program that you would run in DOS - how or if this translates to XP - I don't know. Isn't there some sort of hardware compatibility wizard?

Even XP needs device drivers.

This is most likely the problem. The ISA and PCI slot that are right next to each other are a shared slot. You can either use one or the other but not both at the same time. So if you are attempting to use all the PCI slots and the single ISA slot it is not going to work no matter what you do. I honestly do not remember any boards that did not share the ISA/PCI slot because ISA was being fazed out the ISA slot was rearly used.

Why not just get a USB NIC and plug it into a USB port.

Hey, it's Kevin

Could be shared slots, which would explain the lack of detection - seen a few of those cheap compromises. I wouldn't say that was necessarily the norm though, depends on the age of the machine in question (don't know if the posted specs are for it) but sure, ISA is a rarity anymore. Not a one on my 3yr old P3.

Jboy,

Been busy since I have moved. Ya know, having a real job again, seeing my daughter more and going to be at a real hour all equal less computer time.

I knew I didn't much like the real world ; )

Still, seems like it might have its perks.

Going to bed at a real hour that should have read, see its 10:12pm and I'm getting ready for bed on a Saturday night but then again I have to get my daughter early in the morning but she is worth it. Well this old fart is off to bed. No SNL for me tonight :(

The real world is not all that bad. Just avoid these 3 things.

1. Getting into a serious relationship with a Woman
2. Talking about Politics with others
3. Discussing how you feel about Religion with others

Follow those 3 rules and you shall be ok. Now I am off to bed bye.
