my CD-RW drive and DVD-ROM drives do not work unless a cd is inserted into one of them at POST. What can I do about this? I can burn in Nero 5.5, so I think it may be a software problem.

Might want to go to bios and set all the drives to auto. While you're in there check the drive bootup sequence. It should be floppy first then hd then cd/dvd-rom drives. It may be looking for a cd to try to boot from.
