Hi. I originaly posted this on the Windows 9x forum, but I want to get a couple more opinions before I try anything. So I hope that it's okay that I copy, paste and repost this.
Anyway, here it is and thanks for any help I can get. ^^

--Hi. Recently my CD-RW/DVD combo drive has stopped working with DirectCD and seems to have trouble burning normaly as well. At first I thought that the cd-rw disk I was using for DirectCD has just given it's last hurrah (it was (well, is) all scratched and had (has) bad sectors in it), but I've tried using regular CD-R and it's the same thing. I put the CD in and after it's formated by DirectCD, the cd read light keeps flashing as the disk just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning... the hard drive light along with it. Pushing the eject button on the drive does nothing so I have to shut the computer off and back on and eject the CD from the drive before Windows come on again or else it's the same thing again.
Burning CDs regulary is giving me trouble, too. I do the CD Creator proyect thing and when it comes time to burn, it ejects the blank CD I put in saying that it can't be written to. I push it back in and it comes back out. I have to do this a couple more times before it shuts up and burns. It can, however, read audio, DVD and data disks normaly. Both burned and commercial.
I have tried changing the ribbon cable, putting the drive in PIO mode, disconecting the slave drive (a CD-ROM) so it would be alone on the cable but nothing's worked. Any help would be great.
Oh, and that cd-rw disk that I used to DirectCD to *can* be read by the CD-ROM drive, but when I put it into the CD-RW/DVD... spinning and spinning and spinning...
So here are my system specs just in case. And I'm using DirectCD 3.03/Easy Creator 4.03 (in Windows 98) and DirectCD/Easy Creator 5 Basic (in Windows XP).
My system:
IBM Aptiva 2170-802
AMD 450MHz K6-2 w/3D Now!
192MB RAM
ATi Xpert 128 16MB PCI
SiS 530 intergrated video (disabled)
SoundBlaster Live! Value
ESS 1969 Audio Drive (disabled)
20GB ATA100 Maxtor 5,400RPMs
LG CD-RW/DVD 32x/12x/8x/4x combo drive (master)
Lite-On 40x CD-ROM (slave)
SiS 530 chipset
USR ISA Courier 56K modem
Double boot with Windows 98 (not SE) and XP Home

Had the same problem when I installed EasyCD Creator 5.0 under XP. XP would read from HP burner, but not from DVD plater, even though XP recognized the DVD as a device.
Found solution by installing 5.1 patch for EasyCD Creator.
Apperantly EasyCD Creator installs a bad ATAPI.SYS driver.
