The QSI SBW-242 Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive on My Acer Aspire 1700 notebook has stopped burning suddenly, though it reads both CDs and DVDs normally. When I use a burning program (have tried several, including Nero, NTI that came with system, and Windows internal capabilities) everything appears to go normally, like program appears to burn, takes its time, and then ejects the CD after finishing. But when reinserted, there is nothing on the CD and it is reported as blank.
I have tried by un-installing multiple burning programs (possible conflicts), starting XP in Safe Mode, etc etc, but no avail. My XP is fully updated (SP2) with all critical updates etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does it read at all or is it the blank disc that it is trying to read. Normally when that happens the disc gets out of wack or needs cleaning or just went bad.
If it reads ok then it is not out of allignment.
If you have cleaned it then that leaves only one other thing.IN THE MATTERS OF STYLE,

Well, it does read it I think, I have tried burning several dics. When I insert the burned disc, the drive makes reading sounds, and even the burning programs show a new disc with full space available.

Hi, I have the same problem with my ACER aspire 1351. One day after burning a CDRW, all the CDR I tried to write were blank afer burning. I have also tried to burn under Linux and I get the same problem.
Please write here if you find any solution.
Thanks.
