I have an IBM computer with an 8 X 4 X 32 LG CDRW burner and a pioneer 16X DVD player, all factory installed. The Burner was working one day and then later that same day it wasn't working. It wasn't detected at startup, no lights would come on, the cd tray would not eject and it isn't detected in device manager. It has no life to it. I tried different power connectors and still the same thing. Can anyone help me or explain what happened. I really can't afford a new burner. I haven't even used this one and I've had the machine for about 18 months.

Sounds like a dead drive unless you have installed new hardware on that controller.

Load windows in safe mode and Uninstall all the drivers you can under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and restart in normal mode. If the cd-rw doesn't reinstall, check to see if it is detected in BIOS. If it is not detected in BIOS. You will need a new cd-rw. Also, If you have another cd-rom or cd-rw, you should connect that to see if it works. If not you have a bad IDE controller.

Thanks for the advice. But can you explain the following to me. I ran into this guy and was telling him about my problem. He said let me take a look at it, so I did. He punched some buttons, I don't know which ones, and now it is working again. He left and now I would like to know why it started working again and what he may have done to get it to work. Can anyone explain this? Thanks

Oh my god!!! THis has been happening to me FOREVER!! it sounds exactly like this. Except, it's both my CD-ROm and my CD-RW drives that arent working. At startup the CD-RW drive is always flashing, it isnt in the device manager or in My Computer. It doesn't eject either. The weird thing, though, is that if I restart the computer the cd drives both work perfectly!! But, if I turn the computer off at night, then in the morning I turn it on, they dont work!! It's so weird...Tell me if you find a way to fix it!
