Since the 1st day I've had my pc (about one year) I occasionally encounter a problem where my pc does not recognize my cdrw drive. This usually occurs after I use the drive. If I restart my PC it works (and shows) again.

Today, I was burning a cd using Nero and it stalled at 88% which happens approx. every other time I burn a CD resulting in the last two songs not getting burned. Well I cancelled the burn and when I tried to burn again my drive no longer showed, however, I could put a cd in it and it will spin and the green light blinks. A quick restart fixed this.
Does anyone one know the cause? If it was a cable why does a restart fix the problem. When I searched this site for answers I foung some info regarding making one drive the slave drive (I have a dvd drive as well). If this might be the problem I would appreciate some simple instructions on how to change the drive's status. I don't know what a slave drive means.

Keep in mind this problem has always existed so it is not because of software recently installed.

Another problem I have had after installing and then uninstalling a program (Roxio 6) is that now when I right click on certain icons (DVD drive icon and icons not related to the cd/dvd drives) I get a message from roxio easy CD creator (which I've totally uninstalled) saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a CDROM or other removable disk that is not available" in the same box it instructs me to " Insert the 'Easy CD DVD Creator 6' disk and click OK".

After I cancel that a few times it stops showing. Any ideas on how to get rid of this roxy stuff. That software is almost impossible to completely remover from my PC.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The settings you refer to are the jumper pins on the back of the CD drives. As a general rule, you can use the cable select jumper setting without problem. It's a simple matter of removing the clip (between the power plug and the IDE cable) and placing it in the correct position as indicated on the drive. MA means master, SL means slave and CS is cable sellect. If you don't have a fancy setup then use CS on both drives. Plug the DVD/CD rom drive on the farthest end and the CD/RW drive on the middle.
As for roxio, you may need to check out their website on how to completely remove it. I believe there is a program they provide that will do it.

Thanks hapeekrapee

But I would like to know if you think this is the problem or if you were just simply giving me those instructions because I asked? I don't want to fiddle with any pc mechanics if I don't have to.

I'm not to saavy when it comes to opening up my tower so I hope what you are talking about will be easily recognized per your description.

I'm sure I can figure it out.

Thanks again
