When I installed XP Pro over XP Home, it said something like "Can't find drivers for mass storage device. Will return to this problem later" (It never did).
My CD reader and my reader/writer do not show up in the Device Manager or the Explorer. (My virtual CD drive does.) They are both Compaq devices on my Compag computer.
How do I get 'em back?!
Thanks.

If you are comfortable editing the registry:
Create a Restore point and back up the registry.Open regedit.
Look for;HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\CurrentControlSet\SetControlClass.
Key name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data:[Delete all value data from upper and lower filters]
Note-Do not delete the key or the multi-string values. Delete only the data values.
The keys may be in more than 1 place. You will have to search for them.Exit regedit and reboot.

Hi, Apparently something Nero InCD has installed is kludging up the works, even after Nero is uninstalled.
I do want to edit the registry, but am a relative novice at it. For example, I am not sure what multistring values are (or how to recognize them). Is this one?
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}REG_MULTISZ
SysSetup.Dll,StorageCoInstaller,
SysSetup.Dll,CriticalDeviceCoInstallerUnder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} I have:
UpperFilters and LowerFilters, so I can just delete the Data for each one.
But this: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} appears all over the place, both as Data and as a Name, so what do I do with these entries? E.g.
ClassGUID REG_SZ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} under and elsewhere
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Network\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318},
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} which has UpperFilters and UpperFilters1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In addition InCD had numerous entries, InCDAutoRunEmptyCd appears under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Nero.AutoPlay\shell\InCDAutorunEmptyCD. There are dozens of other Nero entries remaining as well, even after uninstalling.
Thx for your help.

Ok, I tried removing the offending parts of the Filters, then I tried deleting them, but neither worked. I have checked my physical connection, removed all my CD programs, deleted the filters, scanned for hardware changes, and rebooted all to no avail. Any other suggestions?

Go to device manager and uninstall the cd-rom's, reboot and let xp reinstall them.

I *finally* got my CD drives back!
Apparently, when I upgraded to Windows XP, I had a virtual cd/dvd drive which hosed the install. Windows recognized only the virtual drive and not the physical drives. I had several cd/dvd programs on my system and one of them must have created the virtual drive.
First, I deleted the virtual drive by a) Uninstalling it *and* its virtual controller (look for non-existent SCSI controllers under "SCSI and Raid controllers") in the Device Manager, and by b) removing its drivers (in my case: c:\windows\system32\drivers\a347bus.sys and a347scsi.sys).
Next I rebooted to be sure the virtual drives hadn't been reinstalled.
Then I went to the Bios to tell it to Detect Drives: this let me know that my physical drives were connected and working.
Last, in the Device Manager, I reloaded the drivers for the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Primary and Secondary IDE Channels.
Ouila!
Thanks to everyone for their help!
