CD-Rom not working

I pray someone can help me. I have dual boot system with ME on one hard drive and XP on another hard drive, 1.2GHZ AMD Athlon with 512 Megabytes memory. My plextor 8/2/20 CD-RW works fine on both OS but my Plextor Ultra 40Max CD-Rom will work under ME but not XP. If XP finds the drive at start up I get I/O device error when I try to use it. If I try to access it in explorer (when it's found) the system locks up or explorer stops responding. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, I have checked for upper and lower filters in the registry and everything else I have read in assorted forums. This has been happening since XP was installed and before I installed any burning software. Does anyone know of a fix??

You have tried many things, sorry tthat they have not helped. At www.plextor.com, under the Support link, I found a firmware upgrade for your CD-Rom drive. It says the newest one will contain any earlier revisions.
