CD-ROM lag with Windows XP?

Before I installed windows xp, my cd-rom games worked fine. (I had windows 98) Now, the games lag very badly, that is if I can get them to run at all. It doesn't seem to be a compatibility issue as far as the games are concerned, besides I've tried all of the proposed solutions for compatibility issues. Also, the computer claims that the cd-rom drivers are updated. My cd-rom is a Mitsumi FX322M !B 13X/32X. Help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
