My problem started a few months ago. I first started to notice my cd drive (Acer 50x) would not detect any data disk or audio disk I would try to run in my CD-ROM. I checked everything I was suppose to check and concluded that my cd drive had finally given out after 3 years of use. I purchased a new one (Aopen 56x) and installed it. It worked fine for a while but then I came across the same problem. Any disk I place in the drive is not read. The device manager detects that my cd rom is connected and it does show up in the bios. Out of desperation I took out the new Aopen and replaced it with the old Acer... the Acer worked... at least for a few weeks but the same problem came up. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers on both cd drives; updating drivers on both drives; Editing the registry when the Acer stopped working the first time through instructions on Microsoft's web support; Troubleshooting the drive through help and support on Windows XP. I have done everything I can think of to try to figure out what is wrong but nothing has worked. Does anyone know how to fix this? I am at a loss and my only thought is that because both drives are not on Microsoft's Hardware Compatible List, Windows XP somehow changes something (???) to stop reading any disk I insert into the drive. Help.

Did u try switching the E-IDE interface cable? or even the actuall position on the motherboard?
