I have had very few problems with original CDs. Removing the CD-rewriter from your system for the operation in question might help.

I have no idea what "boot error code 5" is.

I have the same problem on one of my 2000
machines at home. One is fine, the other
wont boot off a 2000 cd to install!
It WILL boot off of a win98 cd... not sure
what the difference is. So I installed 98 and
then installed 2000 over it (ran it from 98). Also, now that 2000 is installed, the
cdrom wont autorun. Hmmm.... OS->Motherboard incompatibilty??? quite
possibly.... I haven't flashed the bios yet.
That might very well be the solution.
Did you figure anything yet?

No. However, I suspect the post-98 CD drivers MS has written are designed to do two things (by order of importance):

1. Thwart copying of original or copy-protected CDs

2. Read/write CDs

In accomplishing the first, did the second suffer? I can't say. I know very little programming; so you'll have to accept the above for what it's worth (a guess without substantiation).
