hi.. OK i just bought a second hand laptop..its a Digital HiNote VP MMX Pentium 166. ok the thing is it has no O/S on it now..it had part of 98 on wen i got it but basically just dos...it showed the 98 welcome screen and went to dos mode is all it would do.. Ok so i formated the hdd (its 2.1 gig has 32mb ram BTW)..now what i need to do is load the O/S onto it im going to use Win 95 B as i dont wannt use up all the drive with O/S.. now the thing is the cd rom doesent work...hasnt worked from the start ...thats fine though im not realy planing on using it that mutch ...im only planing on using it to surf the net and e mail and chat ect... ok now the thing is how can i put the O/S on with out the cd rom drive though... The laptop has com port, serial port ,usb port, and infra red...(i dont have infra red on this computer though).. so my question is how can i connect the laptop to my pc so i can load 95b using the d: drive on my normal computer...or how do i go about putting the 95 b os onto floppyies to put it ontop the laptop (laptop has fdd BTW)... All and any answers realy appreciated... Thanks in advance ppl... P.S. ohhh if you know how to put the os onto floppies i realy need to know what comands to use in dos mode to load them onto the laptop coz im not real familiar with dos commands ect .. im using a boot disk ATM i made on xp to get into dos now on the laptop.. thanxx....

Are u SURE the cdrom don't work - the boot disk which u made prob doesn't have the necessary drivers to get ur cdrom working in dos. Try using a proper Win98 bootdisk. You can download it from www.bootdisk.com. As far as loading the O/S, I think ur stuffed unless u can get ur cdrom working !! Maybe Win95 came on a floppy installation, but I don't think there is a way to convert a cdrom disk to floppies and make it install properly.

yea pretty sure the cd rom doesent work... it says cdrom at start but wen i try D: it says invalide drive diredtory.. i did thge 98 se boot disc and and it wont boot from it ..just keep getting the message Remove disk or othrer media . press any key for restart .. i tried changing the boot order to fdd and cd and ive tried to boot from xp cd 98 cd and 95 cd ..im told 95 isnt boot able ... ummm the only boot disc that seems to work is the one i made from xp...any other sujestions??? how bout if i get a external cd rom or is there another way i can try to load the cd rom driver for the rom drive ??? ummmm....a lttle help here????

ok now here is some thing weird... i just put in win 200 cd and it reads and start to load it ...ummm but wont boot from cd on win 98 or 95 and still wont do anything if i try to find d: (or any other letter of the alphabet accep a b c of course) ok so wat am i missing to get it to load 95 b????? please any body???

Might be possible to use something like Laplink, which I believe can work in dos with ur serial port. Prob is, it only *copies* files, so u would have to make a new partition on ur HD (D), then copy Win95 disk to that, then install from D to C drive. External CD drives are usually USB and only work in windows. Other than that I dunno !!
